This will be a SPOT for me to jot down some of my thoughts on various subjects.
NOT ALL ARTIFICIAL SINEW IS CREATED EQUAL: I started out by ordering all my Sinew from Judy Mallow's site (PrimPines) which had the basic colors....red, blue, green, black, white, and natural. The Sinew was wound flat on the spool, lightly waxed, and had 6 strands. Once a strand was cut from the roll, it did not matter which end of the strand was threaded thru the Sharp needle eye, the color was uniform throughout the strand. Unknown to me at the time, many sites sell Sinew in a wide variety of colors and as I have found out, many different degrees of the wax coatings and material quality. Always looking for the best price and quantity for more Sinew, I began buying Sinew from other sites. This was my FIRST introduction to: (1)...... thick and thin waxy coatings on the Sinew (2)...... the different SHADES/COLORS of the word - BLUE (3)...... different thickness of strands (4)...... different number individual strands on a roll (5)...... some strands will change color depending on which end was threaded thru the Sharp needle eye (6)...... some Sinew strands will shred and break.
So be AWARE that other on-line supplier's version of the colors WILL vary in many ways from what you are use to getting.
[1] Some Sinew is so thick with wax: a strand must be pulled through a paper towel a number of times to remove the excess wax before you can use it. {a}..... By holding the Sinew (wrapped in a paper towel) between your thumb and index finger as tight as possible or using your thumbnail through the paper towel, you can remove the excess wax faster. {b}..... Some color may come off with the wax and the color left on the strand will be brighter/lighter. {c}..... The opposite is also true....some rolls of Sinew have so LITTLE wax coating....that I have to run the strand over an old candle before using it.
[2] Some Sinews come wound on the tube in the "ROUND" rather than the "FLAT". {a}..... "Flat" Sinew usually separates into 6 individual strands.... {b}..... "Round" Sinew usually separates into only 3 individual strands, HOWEVER.... {c}..... 1 individual strand of the "Round" is the same thickness as 2 strands of the "Flat".
[3] COLORS....I have decided that Judy Mallow's site sells Bright/Brilliant colors....bright ROYAL BLUE, bright VERMILLION RED, bright EMERALD GREEN and BRIGHT WHITE. {a}..... I now have 4 colors of BLUE...ALL sold under the name: BLUE. {b}..... One is lighter in color, 1 is darker, 1 has more green in it and one is Ms. Mallow's Royal Blue. {c}..... The same, "variety of shades".... appear in the colors Red, Green and White.....only the dark Brown, Black and Natural appear to stay the same.
[4] Quality of Sinew strand and color: some Sinew can ONLY be cut and the end threaded into the Sharp needle eye must always be the "beginning one" as it lay on the roll...in other words....as you pull/separate a strand & cut it....you MUST always thread the "beginning end" into the Sharp needle eye (not the end you just cut).
***[Like crochet yarn, if you pull the yarn thru your fingers, one way it feels smooth....pull it the opposite direction and you can feel a rougher texture....so you always thread the needle on the end that will have the smooth side following the needle.]***
{a}..... Any change in which end is threaded into the Sharp needle eye, will change the shade of color and now it will no longer match that same color on the coil..... {b}..... The strand itself will shred/break apart when used in the opposite direction. PineWeaver....12/09/08 |
